The word “welga” translates to “strike” in Tagalog, the central dialect used in the Philippine language.
WELGA is a play written by Filipino playwright Conrad A. Panganiban. It follows the story of Johnny Montalban, a high school senior living in the South of Market (SoMa) community in San Francisco. He dreams of making it big with his music, however, his mother has a dream of her own―for him to get his diploma. Their dreams clash and, amidst the conflict, Johnny discovers how the subject of labor rights applies to him by learning about the Filipino agricultural workers’ role in the 1965 Delano Grape Strike.
